Internship L-10

There are a number of different reasons for doing an internship. We have identified six reasons for participating in an internship. One: deciding if the career is the right one for you. Two: networking opportunities. Three: gain valuable work experience. Four: gain an edge in the job market. Five: transition into a job. Six: Gives you practical skills you can use in any work setting.

The first reason is to decide if the career you choose is right for.The majority of your life is going to be spent in the workforce. An average person will work the equivalent of 128 months (94,608 hours) of time in their career over their lifetime. You should spend that precious time doing something you enjoy. Participating in internships will help you find a career that best fits you, so you can spend that time actually enjoying what you are doing.

The second reason an internship is a good idea is an internship offers you the opportunity to network with those in your chosen career field. In the world of business, you don’t always get a job based on your credentials, a lot of the time you get a job because of who you know. How many times have you gotten a job just because you knew someone? Networking gives you an advantage in your career field because it helps you build relationships. Relationships with those people who can potentially help you get that “dream job”.

The third reason for participating in an internship is it gives you valuable work experience. Employers look for work experience. Graduate schools look for work experience. To get into Medical school its recommended you have 75 hours of job shadowing, 50 hours of patient contact, and 75-100 hours of community service. In the workplace experience is everything, and an internship helps provide that. Experience also builds confidence and employers value employees who are confident. The more confidence you display the more likely you are to be hired. The fact is, you are more likely to get the job if you have experience.

The forth reason, to gain an edge in the job market. Getting a job out of college is extremely competitive, graduates are finding it harder and harder to get a job in the field they graduated in. The job market has always been competitive, and with the economy the way it is, it’s harder than ever. The good news?“Employers report that 62.5% of their hires had internship experience” in a competitive job market that will give you the competitive edge you need to succeed.

The fifth reason, an internship helps you transition into a job. Many companies offer in company internships that will set you up for a job with that company once your internship is over. The benefit here is obvious; you learn the job, network with employers and then get a job at the place you interned at. It’s a foot in the door for the dream career you always wanted! There’s benefits for an internship as well, “46.2% of employers offer a higher starting salary to those who have internship experience.” An internship will help you both get a job you want and have a higher salary at that job.

The last reason, internships help you learn the skills you need to succeed. No matter what the outcome of your internship, it will teach you the skills you need to be successful in the business world. Employers look for skills like hard work, dedication, passion, adjustability, and people skills. An internship is a learning experience that will help you acquire and sharpen these skills. Most likely, you will be put out of your comfort zone when you participate in an internship. But through experience you will grow and progress and become a better person.

Alicia is a graphic arts student. She enjoys her class work and will graduate in one year with a bachelor's degree in Art and Visual Communications. She has been doing some freelance work for relatives and friends to earn a little extra money to pay for school and has a 30 hour a week job working as a legal secretary in a law office. She likes her job as a legal secretary but wants to use her graphic arts degree when she graduates. What advice would you give to Alicia regarding job search strategies? Where can she go for help? Do you think she will be able to get a graphic arts position after graduation from college?

As we discussed what would be best for Alicia we decided that she should use the network she already has as well as build up a larger network by doing an internship before she graduates to find job opportunities. We also suggested that she should post her work on a website and create a portfolio to take with her wherever she goes so that she can get her work out there and her skills noticed.

We found that she could search for jobs at:

A few job opportunities that we found for her were:

· New Media Designer: New York Public Library : New York, New York, United States

· Graphic Designer: The Art Institute of Chicago

CLSS 2100

Going into Career and Major exploration, I was fairly certain I was going to school at UVU for a Bachelor in Biology. I had been going to school now for five years with this plan being my main target and after my bachelor I would apply to a dental school. It seemed like a good plan, I have fifteen year experience in the dental field so why not? I chose to take this class because I needed a class to go with my chemistry class. I had to pick an online class to allow myself time to study a class I knew was going to be tough. Within the first week of this class I knew I was is the wrong major for me.

The second or third assignment was the Myers and Brigs test. I had never taken this test but I was blown away at how accurate it was on my personality. One thing that sticks out in my mind is something that was in the reading that week, (you may have interest in a topic and not have the aptitude for that particular topic). It was like a light going on in my head, it was that moment I realized I have interest in many topics that I don’t have the aptitude for. After taking that test and with the personality test, and getting of suggested career paths that might suit me, I felt extremely empowered. Among the careers and interest my dental career was listed but there were also so many more careers that were such a natural fit for me that I couldn’t believe I did not consider them before.

The first thing you see when you go into my blog is a picture of my husband and I when the Daily Harold did a story about us. My husband completed his Fiftieth marathon and I my twenty fifth. The first thing you read in anything about myself is how I love to run or exercise and among the huge list of careers I was given to consider was several careers in exercise science, Physical therapy, and Physical education. The very next assignment was to declare a major and all the steps that go along with it, so I did, Exercise science outdoor recreation. It was a very good fit seeing as all the prerequisites for Exercise science are the same as biology.

I am only missing two classes that I need, and they are human anatomy and physiology. When it was time to pick classes for the spring semester I enrolled in both. Next fall my baby will be going to school full time and so will I, my next step after my exercise science degree I think I will set my sights to the P.T. program. My Son will be getting home from a mission when I get into the program and he will be doing the P.T. program as well. I would love to start a practice where we would work together.

Things I love to do

Things I love to do

1-Play with my family.

2-compete in races.

3-Learn

4-Socialize with lots of people, make new friends every day.

5-Help my friends in need.

The values that are reflected in these actions and hobbies are first, my family is the most important thing in my life so loyalty and love to my family.

Second, my family is not just the blood relations. This is extended to my close friends who I think is a quality or value of love for my fellow man. This is what I think helping my friend in need represents.

Third and fourth, I love to meet lots of new people and that is where my love of running comes from. I love to network and be able to touch lots of people’s lives. I’m not sure that is a value but I do love people. I think the value, my running best represents is goal minded and determined. I love having goals and working hard for what I want, in addition to reaching my goals I love to celebrate my success and drag anyone willing to come along with me to try something they never thought they could do.

Fifth, I love to learn. I don’t care what it is, from changing a tire to dental surgery to how my husband’s mind works. I think the love of learning and helping and fixing or trying to fix things to make a difference is a value, even though I’m not sure what it would be called.

I hope when I choose a career I can include all of these values. This is what makes me most happy and if I get to exercise them every day my career and life will be awesome! Now if I could just find one that encompasses all of them, any suggestions?
